Statement
I am visual artist living and working in Oakland, California.

In my work I investigate personal narrative, memory and place. My works depict the past and present, and together discuss a metaphor for the difference between a life lived by personal choice, and the coerciveness of a high-demand religious upbringing.

When working from memory I allow manner and gesture to inhabit the picture plane in a sort of non-linear order, similar to how I remember the events, emotions and individuals from past experiences. I work out a literal interpretation of the place, and re-work that place to fit the abstract and intangible emotion connected to the memory.

The role of materiality, touch, and the handmade is integral to my work. It creates the pathway for a physical substance to be the interpreter of ideas and visual expression through a proprioceptive outlet similar to muscle memory.
